As an academy student Daizo's mother caught an unknown disease. Due to the constant fear of her dying he stopped attending classes. He spent a lot of his time in and out of the hospital, visiting his mother while she was on life support. He learned a lot about medicine and anatomy from one of the medical ninja who worked at the sand village hospital. Daizo was more interested in finding a cure for his mother's disease than he was graduating. Unfortunately as time passed his mother could no longer speak. She wrote on a piece of paper to him one day asking him to not devote his life to her and that she wanted him to graduate before her passing. 

Daizo began going back to class, but it wasn't soon after that his mother had a turn for the worse. She was barely breathing now and he was told she would pass soon. Daizo had requested to take the graduation exam even though he had missed several months of classes.
