design The case for leveling/level-limited/hardcore/RNG content

No, getting those jutsu and being able to survive on your own is fun because you achieved it. If you logged in the first time and there was no danger, none of those things would matter at all. -
How to not make a point (and get banned) by Ueda Introduction There's a lot of people who join Nin Online just to make friends, PvP, enjoy the PvE or leveling experience, or just walk around a fully visualized 2D Ninja World, just generally have fun and then leave. But this isn't the only way to play Nin Online. If you're a bit of a cunt, there's another way to play the game (or not play!) So this is a guide for you. Introducing - Becoming a bit of a cunt and getting banned mode Why? So you're not happy with something. You want to make a point, but you don't want it to get across. But you also want to do it while being cool, and then get banned. No lie, it's cool when you see someone on discord standing up to authority or just being the contrarian who is never content with anything. It makes you look like a real cool person to hang out with when you join a community not to fit in, but to be that special guy along with all the other special guys with that bit of zest, that bit of edge. So you want to be that Edgy guy. You want to show the world "I'm edgy, I can show the staff who's boss in this community" and I can be thaaat guy. Next you need to know... How? I've broken it down into 4 steps. First you have to be a player with atleast some level of commitment, else how else will you be taken seriously? 1. Register a free account on Nin Online, a free to play game where the staff don't pander to you for money and nothing is pay to win, and you can enjoy every single bit of content for free without paying a cent forever with no disadvantages besides not looking as fab. 2. Login to the game or join our discord or forum community. 3. Enjoy for a good few days, weeks, month or years . This is the part that gets easier.. 4. Deciding all the people who make this game you've been enjoying are cunts now This is one of the easiest ways. Basically, you just stop being grateful that the staff have provided you with a game you wanted to play up to this point, and then start biting the hands that feed you. As you may know, Nin Online is ran and operated by a small team (mainly two people) who built this game for fans. We're not a large corporation with funding, and we don't have support staff. So it's very easy to turn all your interactions with the people who built the game into a shit show. One way to start is by making a valid criticism like "Nerf Tai/GF". With most games, the developers of the game typically have support staff and default responses to questions and feedback. So show your appreciation (or lack of) that the developers actually read all your messages personally and listen to your feedback 1:1 with a phrase like "smh, Tai/GF broken af, the staff have no idea how to balance" Antagonizing the developers, and just generally giving them flak for not doing exactly what you want, or for making design decisions you don't agree with is a great way to get banned, but you have to be vocal about it, a good statement to use would be.. "for real though, raise the exp rate everyone quitting because you want to make that blessing money" Adding an air of arrogance that says "I'm a better game designer than the people who have actually spent half their lives making this game for me now that I'm here everything about the design is shit and should change to be how I want it" is a good added touch. Of course, you can't be so direct so just say something along the lines of "for real though, would take me 5 minutes to fix the balance" or "It's easy, just do X and it'd be fixed" or "not gonna lie, staff don't know what they're doin" It's good to assume that your solution is brilliant and genius and the staff are just idiots who don't think, because it's not like it's their job to think about these problems every day so they would've never thought of it. It's not like they could have other things planned that would go against that change right? It's a game in development, so everything should be perfect at every point in time or else all the staff are cunts. In fact, you can capitalize on that by using a line like "Nin is dead because vision" "Because vision™" Conclusion It's not the only way to get your point across to staff. But the other ways like presenting your case respectably, don't make you more cool, and you wouldn't get banned. There's also a lot of other ways you can demonstrate your disdain for authority, or emphasize how funky rebellious you are in the face of authority. All in all, the only way the staff are going to listen to your feedback is if you're not even playing the game anymore, so if all else fails, just say you're quitting! Have fun!

If you're playing to grind to max level hoping the game will get better - it won't. If you login the first time and you're having fun interacting and being a ninja, that's the kind of person that will enjoy the game. If you're hoping that grinding for MONTHS is going to make the game suddenly better than it is at the start, you're wasting your time. What kind of evil game developer would design a game where the fun is locked behind a grind wall? It's the same for any game really, if you log in and play any game and you're not having fun, stop playing. It's not going to get better from there. Most games throw the best parts at you at the start to get you hooked. -
Ranks Mizukage The Mizukage is the Mist village's leader. The Mizukage is generally known to be a relentless fighter, as due to the political system governing the leadership position, being such is a requirement. To be strong is also a requirement to maintain the position. As the Mist village is a war torn village, and being the only thriving village in the Land of Water, the Mizukage holds to most important job, and sets the example for all other ninja to follow. Gaining Mizukage rank is easy, you just have to defeat the Mizukage in a challenge for his position. This can only be done if the leaders of the 3 clans in power choose to call for a battle to the death. The winner of the battle becomes the Mizukage, who then chooses 3 new clans to be in power. The old Mizukage is normally exiled if defeated in a battle challenge before his 6 months tenure. Retirement: If a ninja is a Chunin before becoming Mizukage, and serves as an active Mizukage for atleast 6 months. He will be promoted to Jonin upon retirement. Chunin & Jonin Path Chunin and Jonin path is the traditional ranking system in all villages. Chunin As a Chunin, you have reached a level of maturity and ability that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess and as such, are qualified to guide other ninja and lead missions. In a war, a Chunin would be a team leader. Requirement: Passing a Chunin Exam Jonin Generally highly experienced and highly skilled shinobi who serve as military captains. In a war, the Jonin would be a commander, commanding teams as battalions. If enough villagers and the respective Kage deem the shinobi to be fitting to the rank, they will be promoted. Requirement: Send a team of Genin into a Chunin Exam, Complete numerous RP Missions with players with mostly good reviews Specialized Jonin Path A Specialized Jonin, sometimes called an S-Jonin is a ranking granted to Ninja whom display "Jonin level abilities" in one area of the Ninja Arts (eg. Sensory, Medical Ninjutsu) but are not balanced in terms of skills, and hence would be unlikely to climb the normal Chunin and Jonin paths. Specialized Jonin are normally tasked to lead missions that require a higher-than-usual level in a specific ability. Eg. Leading a team of Medical Ninja on a rescue mission. In a war, a Specialized Jonin will normally either lead a team tasked with his specialization, or fight as a Genin-level ninja. A Specialized Jonin is comparable to a real world military specialist. A completely different path from the Officer rankings, and still under officers (in this case, Chunin and Jonin) in ranking. Requirement: Display extraordinary abilities in one area of the Ninja Arts, participate in a Chunin Exam. Genin Genin are the lowest level of ninja and also the ones that display the most difference in power. When they become genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy – being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. Requirement: Pass the Genin Test in the Academy Academy Student Academy students are trained and prepared for life as a shinobi. They are not an actual part of the shinobi force, as they are still in the process of mastering the very basics of the ninja lifestyle. However, they can be conscripted as part of the war potential in times of emergency. Titles Shadow Council The shadow council is picked by the Mizukage indirectly, by deciding on three clans within the village to elect someone to be in the Shadow Council. They hold great power to overthrow the Mizukage himself, which is the only check on power the village has. Requirement: The general rule of thumb is that the highest ranking ninja from each clan is the default choice, unless there is heavy objection within the clan. Hunter-Nin Leader More information coming soon..

Hey Ninja, Since 2013, we've ran two major competitions called "Ready, Set, Refer!". Those were referral contests. This time, it's going to be quite a different concept, but it's your chance to win a bunch of prizes. It's not as major as the referral contest, but it's going to be a lot easier to join in, so I hope there'll be more participants. Ready, Snap, Go is our first screenshot competition hosted by myself, where I'll be picking the best 6 screenshots, and each player will receive the following prizes! Prizes 1st Place: Silver Ninja / $10 Ninja Credit / Shark Skin Changer 2nd Place: $10 Ninja Credit / Shark Skin Changer 3rd - 6th Place: Shark Skin Changer On top of these prizes, the screenshots will also be prominently displayed in the Official Screenshots section with a text saying "Screenshot submitted by YOURNAME" for probably the rest of time, which will be a neat legacy/mark to leave on Nin Online, if you're into that~ The reason I'm including so many Shark Skin Changers may seem weird at first, but I'm sure you can make the connections yourself! Rules Submit as many screenshots as you like of Nin Online Screenshots should be of Nin Online (In-game, not login, not discord) Screenshots should be 1920x1080 or 4K but in Zoomed Mode, don't crop your screenshot! Screenshots should not be stretched in any way Submit screenshots without any personal credits (we'll add that in ourselves, in a consistent style) Editing must be done tastefully, as to not mislead potential players (and no memed images) Submit your screenshots into this forum in the account you would like the prizes to be received on. The Deadline is June 5th 2019! Tips Hidden UI Mode is preferred but not a requirement ("Tab" Key to Hide UI) Empty scenes are boring, try getting a group involved Less text on screen makes for a more appealing screenshot, chatboxes can be fine, but it's not appealing text, it'll be distracting Choose an interesting map which means something to you or appeals to everyone you can use ALT + PRT SCN to capture a image of your window, if you are playing in windowed mode. If you are playing in fullscreen mode, just PRT SCN will do. Once you have that, you can paste your clipboard into paint and save it as a .PNG for highest quality Hiding your cursor is a good idea Think about what you can use to attract potential players into the Nin world Looking forward to seeing what everyone submits! Dear Ninja, Soon™ is finally here as we prepare to launch the Hidden Mist Village as the third playable starting village for Nin Online. This will be a game changing moment as it will be the biggest update since the launch of beta in 2017 (which introduced Sand village and Missing Ninja) in terms of content being introduced at the same time. because Mist village will launch with plenty of new content! The Land of Water Welcome to the Land of Water, a region ruled over by the Water Daimyo. The creatures and enemies roaming this new land is unique to it's shores. Even if you are not a Mist ninja, soon your missions will take you to the Land of Water, so you'll soon explore it yourself! Along with the Mist Village, a smaller village will also be present on launch, a small settlement on the edge of the Land of Water which will be used for storyline missions as time goes on. The Land of Water is a country ravaged by war. Bloody, and bloody poor, not everyone can afford to live in the biggest village. The mapping done for the Land of Water, including the Hidden Mist Village itself, is in my view, the finest of all the game so far. With detailed forest maps, and more details fit into each screen than ever before. The village is expansive, and all in all, we're introducing almost 50 new maps at once (including interiors of course). New Organization: Hunter-nin Hunter-nin are a concept unique to the Hidden Mist Village. Replacing the concept of an ANBU, hunter-nin stalk and kill missing Mist ninja to protect the secrets of the Mist. When the Leaf and Sand ANBU get ANBU swords, Hunter-nin will get water whips. New Organization: Mist Military Police Force Basically the equivalent of LMPF and SMPF for the Mist. The MMPF will be available at launch. However, due to the lack of Chunin in the village, there will not be much use for the organization early on. New Sub-mastery: Soap Bubble Style Just as the Leaf village has Gentle Fist style and the Sand village has Fan Style, the Mist village will launch with a complete and unique sub-mastery as well! New Politics With the introduction of a third village, a lot will change in terms of politics. Leaders will be hard pressed not to maintain a good relationship with at least one other village. Being in war with two villages will be hard for a village, so alliances will actually begin to matter. The Mist village will be ran as a militaristic dictatorship, where power will be challenged by others every few months. It will be a survival of the fittest. A battle to the death will determine the leader. This is very different from the Leaf village which is a democracy, and the Sand village which is a monarchy. With this, the kind of player who seeks for battles as a way to consolidate power should gravitate towards the bloody mist. The advisers of the Mist village will consist of 1 member of each clan in which the Mist leader favors. So once the victory has been won, as a check on power, the leader of the Mist village will choose 3 clans, which will each elect a respected member of the clan to become an adviser to the Mizukage. If all 3 clan leaders decide to, they can call for a battle to find a new leader at any time, but it has to be a Unanimous decision. As with any good dictatorship, we've already chosen that the village will be ran by no other than Mizukage @Kenock, with myself and @Sezu as the advisers to the Mizukage. We will work (mainly Kenock) to maintain some semblance of order while the village is in it's growth period without any proper ranks. New Soundtracks Of course, with a new location as major as this, we will be introducing new music to bring out the gloom of the Hidden Mist Village and the Land of Water. And even more..! The Mist will launch with just one unique summon, and more after, initial clans will be ready... I'll be detailing the work done for the village in further details in a development log post launch. New Launch Date We're here at a point we can safely announce that the launch date will be.. Regards, Ueda

design The case for leveling/level-limited/hardcore/RNG content
Ueda replied to topic's Ueda in Development Logs
I can tell you what the gameplay is like by design and how you're encouraged to play by the games design. I can't force every single player to play it the way it was designed. We can do just that, encourage and continue adding content based on the games design. You can make blank statements like everyone just grinds whatever. But you know that's not true. Nobody ever has a plain grinding experience all the time in Nin. People's missions are designed to place you in situations you will encounter enemies. Etc. If you abandon all your missions and decide to grind all the time because all you want is the highest experience mission then it's something that can be balanced to an extent but not completely avoided. Some people just prefer the experience of mindlessly grinding for hours. But don't act like it's by design that you're encouraged to do that. Nothing in the game asks you to hurry up and grind to max level. That's on your own voilition. Also, it doesn't need a lot of thinking to understand why daily missions are not selectable. It's partly explained in the OP, and the rest of it is just that players will always choose the path of least resistance which is the easiest mission with the highest rewards. But by randomizing it, it varies the challenge level and reward level which is something I believe is good. If players had the choice, Nin online would be Docs online. Said a million times before too, but dailies are not a replacement for storyline missions. And when I do get time to work on content like story missions, I do them for the lower levels like the Toad Arc and all the < 10 content. Adding more dailies doesn't replace proper uniquely written story missions and is not intended to do that. Those you will have the choice to do if and when you want to. Also, if you are playing in a time of day where there are less players and hence less enemies online to interrupt your dailies and make your daily experience more varied, then I recommend you try logging in during peak hours where you'll definitely not be able to finish your dailies without encountering other players. -
design The case for leveling/level-limited/hardcore/RNG content
Ueda posted a topic in Development Logs
Hey Ninja, Back again with another dev log. This time I just want to talk about some reasons why sometimes I add content which are for a limited level range. Right now mainly two bosses that you can only fight within the level range 20-30 and 30-40. To understand why such content is required, we have to talk about the design of the game, and the core of what is fun in an MMORPG. First of all, when I approach the design of Nin Online, I don't think about training from Levels 1-50 (or the new level cap when you're reading this!) as a requirement/procedure to get to the fun bit. One intention behind the design of leveling up from 1-50 is to provide players with a story to tell about their character, how they got to their power. A story to tell Think about the difference between playing Nin Online and playing an arena based game where you jump in on a level playing field, eg. Shinobi Striker. If you play Nin Online, you character starts off as an Academy Student, starts doing menial tasks for the village, eventually grows and discovers his first elemental chakra nature, or that he's gifted in Taijutsu or Medical Ninjutsu. He does a few missions that require him to team up with a group of 3 ninja and work under a Chunin/Jonin instructor. He makes friends along the way, and when he's killed a billion times in this leveling journey, he makes enemies too. Hopefully he's made more friends than enemies, that can help, and he's found some sort of purpose. It feels good to overcome obstacles Jumping into a game in an even playing field is fun when you want a purely competitive, fair experience. Nin Online doesn't strive to be that. It's tries to be a breathing world where if you've invested time into training in the game, you have a competitive age. Ie. It's an RPG. In any RPG, you start off feeling weak and it feels good to gain powers along the way. The feeling people get when they start off weak and eventually start being able to fend for themselves, and then further improve and can own people or hold their grounds against the best is a priceless feeling. But it takes time investment, and Nin Online aims to be a game for the people who have time to play the game, not sell out to the casuals who complain about not being able to get everything they want by pointing at it. If things are rare, it's worth more Simply put, if everything is obtainable by everyone all the time, then nothing is worth anything and those items are only worth whatever their stats are. There's items people don't need but have spent months in gaining because they want them. When they finally do gain it, it's worth a lot. Why did they want it? because it had value. RNG makes life more exciting If everything is set to for example, if you've killed 1000 wolves and it doesn't drop your sword, it will just give you your sword, then everyone knows the value of the item is only 1000 wolves, it feels cheapened, you didn't really hit a jackpot, the game took pity on you and gave you what you wanted. There is still a place for content that you can surely get as long as you try. For example, items that are bought with Ryo, items that are crafted with fixed amounts of more common items that can be bought with ryo or hunted. Items that are attached to finishing hard missions. But RNG items will always have to exist in some form for those who are willing to invest the time to get that +1 item. Spontaneous Experience In hours of straight play, your time in Nin Online should not be doing a single thing. Here's how it could play out vs. how it should. Log in -> Grind for 10 hours -> log out -> sleep -> login again tomorrow and repeat vs. Log in -> Take on a mission that requires you to enter an enemy village -> get interrupted by enemies and fail -> rest your Battle Injuries off while socializing in your village -> your village is spontaneously raided -> you escape narrowly and hide somewhere while stronger ninja battle it out -> you attempt your mission again and succeed -> you take your second daily mission which is to chill in the sauna -> you chill awhile and get rewarded while doing it -> you take your last mission and it's not very good so you choose to discard it (better luck tomorrow) -> since you're out of dailies, you go grind for awhile but you bump into people who ask you if you can accompany them on their mission -> you take a spontaneous journey to an enemy village -> you bump into enemy ninja with bounty -> you kill them and gain some bounty rewards -> you send off your new friend and you go get your bounty reward -> you reached a new level tier and you've unlocked fighting a boss -> you find a team of similar leveled ninja you've never met before and go try to finish that boss -> it's difficult but you do it after a few attempts -> you're lucky and it drops a rare RNG item -> you argue with your team about who gets it -> you log off with the item and feel great that you earned something rare today at the expense that your village ninja now know you're a bit of a jerk -> log out -> sleep -> you login again and get a different mission and now your village is on the verge of exiling you and nobody wants to team with you Back to level-limited content That's some of the things you have to understand about the core philosophy for the hardcore nature of Nin Online and why we don't have everything just at the end game. 1. Encouraging taking your time If you can do everything at 50, then leveling is a process of unlocking things you can do. There's no reason to take your time because your goal instantly becomes to do whatever is easiest to get to 50 so that you can do all the "fun things". But then you realize that you've already missed half the 98% of the fun by grinding all the way as fast as you could. 2. We want people to experience different things at different points in their ninja journey 1-10 should feel different from 11-20, which should feel very different from 40-50. Even if just visually, you should feel like you've doing more impressive feats, and you should feel like you've gained power, and your jutsu should feel stronger. To reflect this, bosses should feel like they're getting even more challenging. 3. Challenge. If bosses were available at any point pass the level requirement and not limited, people wouldn't do it at the level requirement if they found it a challenge. They would stick to grinding weak unchallenging mobs and procrastinate getting those bosses killed till when the bosses were no longer a challenge, and then it wouldn't have been fun doing it. But that's what the game encouraged them to do - they would've been stupid not to have done that. Currently, those bosses are designed to be a challenge at the level range it is set, once you're past it, it's going to be a face roll. 4. Similar point, but if the easy way is to just continue grinding or logging out and doing dailies everyday. Your experience is narrow, there's no variety. Ideally, in Nin Online, things should happen spontaneously, things should vary in your hours of playing. You should unlock new things and be encouraged to go try those things immediately. I hope this explains why things are how they are, it's really hard to explain when there's only two things that are this way. But eventually when there's more content in this manner, it will become more evident this creates a more well-rounded, varied experience over the course of your time playing.- 22 replies
